Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services students from Loughborough College put their learning to the test earlier this month during an exciting residential trip to Walesby Forest, Nottinghamshire.

Staff and students camped in for two nights in the forest, taking part in a varied and challenging curriculum of activity, including team building and physical training exercises, simulated law enforcement training, orienteering, camouflage and concealment, and first aid emergency training.

Students also took part in exciting night time search activities, learnt more about formal military marching practices, known as foot drills, and showed off their musical talents during a Walesby’s Got Talent karaoke evening.

Lecturer in Public Services at Loughborough College, Stuart Taylor shared: “The students where amazing! They developed their confidence, resilience, discipline, and teamwork. They were a credit to our department and the college, and we are proud of all of them.

“The staff who planned and delivered the trip were fantastic and it was great to see them drawing on their individual backgrounds within the public services sector to create an authentic learning experience for our students. A special thanks to our college Wellbeing Mentor, Natasha Warnaby, who joined us on the trip and braved the camping to ensure our students’ mental health was well looked after whilst away from home.”

Also on the visit were 22 second year Level 2 and 3 students who volunteered their time to assist on the residential trip, supporting first year students and offering words of advice and encouragement. Stuart reflected: “The second year students who joined us at Walesby were invaluable in creating a supportive and inclusive environment on the trip.

“They were essential to assisting students, giving up their own time to help first year students. They did us proud and took initiative to develop and grow their own leadership skills.”
