The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) BTEC National in Computing is designed to provide learners with a strong, industry-relevant foundation in computing, preparing them for progression onto Level 3 Technical Level in Digital Software Development, Apprenticeships, or employment within the digital sector.

The programme reflects the rapid pace of technological change. At the core of the qualification is a carefully structured set of mandatory units that ensure all learners develop a secure understanding of essential computing concepts. These include computer systems, programming, data management, cyber security, networks, and the role of professional practice within the digital industry.

Through this core, learners build technical competence alongside critical problem-solving, analytical thinking and digital literacy, equipping them with the confidence to apply their knowledge in both academic and real-world contexts.

Course Content

The course includes the following, but is not limited to:

  • Programming Fundamentals – Computing concepts and their application
  • Computer Network Security and Encryption – Types and origins of security threats
  • Human-Computer Interaction – User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI)
  • Practical Programming – Principles of Computer Science

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, you will also need to have GCSE Maths grade 4/C or above and GCSE *English at grade 3. Or A BTEC Level 2 qualification in Computing or equivalent, or relevant working experience.

*Students will be required to resit English GCSE.

Progression

Successful students could progress to Level 3 T Level in Digital Software Development.
