Hairdressing and Barbering Students Sharpen Their Skills at National Competition
Thursday 21st May 2026

Students from the Hairdressing and Barbering department at Loughborough College enjoyed outstanding success at this year’s Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Competition National Finals in Blackpool earlier this month, earning a record number of trophies.
Representing the College were Level 3 Barbering students Corben Shaw, Sonny Huthwaite, and Ewan Coyle, Level 2 Barbering students Tate Ramsell and Brandon Laidlaw, and Level 2 Women’s Hairdressing students Mihaela Kyriacou, Libby Bailey, and Jessica Correira.
Amongst the hopefuls this year was Barbering student Corben Shaw, who improved on last year’s achievements by upgrading his Bronze medal in Men’s Haircut and Style to two silver awards. This year, Corben showcased even more of his talents, entering the Beard with Integrated Skin Fade category with his dad as his model, and the Beard class, with tutor Joe Forshaw as his model.
Sonny Huthwaite also achieved fantastic success, winning first place in the Barbering Classic Taper Fade and Finish category, taking home both a trophy and a brand-new top-of-the-range pair of barbering scissors.
The event proved to be highly competitive, with students supporting one another throughout and many volunteering as models for their teammates. Alongside the competition, the group enjoyed everything Blackpool had to offer, helped by glorious sunshine throughout the weekend.
Hairdressing and Barbering Lecturer at Loughborough College, Kerie Mooney shared: “We are all just so incredibly proud of all of our students who participated in all the heats and levels of this competition. These students are truly talented, and they have bright futures in the industry ahead of them."
“A huge thank you to everyone involved for helping make the trip such a memorable and successful experience. This was a really special year for the competition and showcased some of the brightest stars in our department.”
