Bronze Medal Triumph for Barbering Student at National Hairdressing Finals
Thursday 22nd May 2025
Level 2 Barbering student Corben Shaw has brought home a prestigious bronze medal from the national finals of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) competition, held in Blackpool last weekend.
Corben competed in the Men’s Haircut and Style category – a highly competitive round dominated by Level 3 learners and scrutinised by some of the toughest judges in the industry. In front of hundreds of spectators, Corben showcased his talent with a focused performance that earned him a place on the podium.
Hairdressing and Barbering Lecturer, Kerie Mooney, who accompanied the group, said: “The standard was incredibly high, and the judges were absolutely ruthless. Corben didn’t let the pressure get to him – he was so cool, calm, and determined.
“He has worked incredibly hard for this, and I am beyond proud of him. Corben is going places he doesn’t even know yet – but the world better watch out!”
The event was made even more special by an incredible show of support for Corben. His classmates paid their own way to attend the finals, and his parents, younger brother, and even his boss at the barbershop where he works part-time – who closed the salon for the day – were there cheering him on.
Kerie added: “We’ve NEVER seen that kind of support before. It was heart-warming. The whole group were completely immersed in the weekend, and when Corben won third place, the cheers were wild. It was so emotional to see everyone come together for him. It was a true bonding experience for students, families, and staff.”
Joining Corben in the competition were fellow Barbering student Ollie Baker, who took part in the Men’s Fashion Cut and Blow Dry category, and Hairdressing learners Tye–Jessica Crozier and Ewan Cole, who competed in the Hair and Makeup Fantasy section.
