What Is…Sustainable Engineering?

Posted: 25th October 2023 - 10:26am

As technology continues to develop and focus on the impact of products and systems on the environment, the demand for sustainably engineered materials and manufacturing grows.

At Loughborough College, our BEng (Hons) in Sustainable Engineering degree is a fantastic opportunity to study for a highly sought-after degree awarded in partnership with Loughborough University.

We spoke to Ashwin Dobariya, Curriculum Manager for Higher Education (HE) Engineering to learn more about Sustainable Engineering at Loughborough College.

What is Sustainable Engineering?

Sustainable engineering is a specialised field of engineering that places a strong emphasis on designing and implementing products, processes, and systems in a manner that reduces their adverse impact on the environment, society, and the economy. The primary objective of sustainable engineering is to formulate solutions that cater to present need without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfil their own requirements.

Sustainable engineering is applicable across various engineering domains, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and more. It plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, all while striving to pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.

What Will You Learn on the Loughborough College Course?

In the first year of study, learners establish a foundational understanding of fundamental engineering principles, including core engineering subjects such as Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Principles, Electronics Principles, and more.

The second year of study will build upon the foundational concepts from the first year. During this stage, learners delve further into subjects like Project Management, Enterprise and Innovation, Power Electronics, Smart Materials, Renewable Energy, Automation, Robotics, and Mechatronics.

Moving into the final year, we engage with advanced topics, including Systems and Control, Smart Manufacturing, Smart Networks, Sustainability and Environmental Engineering, and an Independent Project.

What Projects Stand Out to You?

During the first year, learners visit various industries, including a hydrogen fuel cell facility and a sustainable farm to gain a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy.

In the second year, all students are provided with an exciting opportunity to participate in Young Enterprise, allowing them to develop various leadership, entrepreneurial, and management skills. Last year, student Dylan Bamford not only took the title of Start Up of the Year in the UK, but went on to win Innovation of the Year at the Gen-E Expo in Istanbul as part of the College’s Team Tiaki.

Additionally, each year includes an international destination visit to explore different parts of the world. Previously, learners visited Northern Italy, including Milan and Venice. Earlier this year, learners visited Iceland's geothermal power plant and the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Plant in the UK.

What Career Opportunities are there for Graduates?

To meet the evolving needs of the sector, organisations are increasingly seeking multidisciplinary engineers who possess an understanding of mechanical systems, electrical power, and software electronics for effective and efficient engineering designs.

As a graduate with a background in core engineering modules and a focus on sustainability, Loughborough College graduates will be well-equipped for various career opportunities. Potential roles include Design Engineer, Product Development and Test Engineer, Energy Consultant, and Maintenance Engineer. These roles allow you to apply your knowledge and skills to address the growing demand for sustainable solutions across diverse industries.
