Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) inAssistant Accountant

An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practise or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day to day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

The Apprenticeship course is normally full time, which might include attending college on a day release or your tutor visiting you in the workplace.

Regular formative assessment, development of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace. As part of the qualification, Apprentices must complete all units and be competent in real work environment.

  • Start dates set for college Cohorts –  w/c 22nd Jan 2024, w/c 29th April 2024 – Enrolment to take place the month prior to cohort start date
  • The apprenticeship is primarily based in the workplace
  • Within the first 12 months additional training is delivered at Loughborough College weekly on a Wednesday 9.30-16.30 some weeks will include Apprenticeship Workshop / Portfolio (Dates to be provided on enrolment).


  • AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians)


This Apprenticeship consists of a mixture of classroom taught delivery weekly during term time at Loughborough College. Taught delivery includes Portfolio Building Class, Preparation for End Point Assessment, Tutorial and the Teaching Element. If functional skills are required, these are taught in college lessons.

The AAT membership sits with the learner as their personal membership to the professional body of AAT which costs £225 for the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

AAT membership books (approximately cost £45 for Level 3), or any exam resits (approx £60 each) sit with the learner / employer to cover

The End Point Assessment resits are also an additional cost which sit with the learner and employer to cover.

Entry Requirements
& Functional Skills

  • Apprentices with GCSE grades C/4 or above in English and Maths are exempt from Functional Skills.
  • AAT L2 Foundation Certificate
  • If an Apprentice has not already achieved Level 2 (GCSE C/4 or above) English & Maths they must: - Study for and achieve Functional Skills Level 2 English & Maths.
  • Initial Assessment results on enrolment Level 2 or higher in Maths & English to be achieved.


  • L3 Apprenticeship Standard in Assistant Accountant
  • L3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting
  • L2 Functional Skills English and maths (if required).


  • Business Administration L3
  • Team Leader/Supervisor L3
  • Professional Tax Accountant L4
  • Operations Manager L5, CMDA L6


On-programme is the learning phase for Apprentices to apply the academic theory to their own organisations and role, and to capture the skills, knowledge and behaviours developed on the programme and in the workplace. To achieve this, Apprentices need to complete off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their Apprenticeship, this is tracked and monitored through our e-portfolio. This might be achieved through shadowing colleagues, E-learning, internal training and research as well as taught sessions by Loughborough College.
