Role overview
Property Maintenance Operatives keep buildings safe, efficient, and in good working order across housing, education, healthcare, hospitality, retail, and commercial settings.
Apprentices develop a broad range of practical trade skills to carry out day-to-day maintenance, repairs, and improvements to internal and external areas of properties.
You’ll learn how to:
- Carry out general repairs using carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, tiling, painting, and basic electrical skills
- Diagnose and fix minor faults safely and efficiently
- Maintain external areas such as drainage, brickwork, glazing, fencing, and pathways
- Use hand and power tools correctly and work to building regulations
• Record, report, and communicate maintenance information using digital tools
- Support sustainability by reducing waste and improving energy performance
Entry requirements
Apprentices aged 16 to 18 at the start of their training are required to achieve English and Maths qualifications to complete their apprenticeship, if they do not already hold suitable equivalent qualifications grade. Apprentices who do not already hold a suitable equivalent qualification in either English or maths or both subjects are funded to achieve up to an approved level 2 qualification in these subjects.
Apprentices aged 19+ at the start of their training can also be funded to study up to an approved level 2 qualification in English or maths or both, if they do not already hold suitable equivalent qualifications and their employer agrees that this should be part of their training plan.

Programme includes
The broad purpose of the occupation is to conduct the general day-to-day maintenance required to keep a range of properties in a good state of repair. Property maintenance operatives conduct routine maintenance tasks, and minor planned and responsive repair works, using a broad range of fundamental trade skills including carpentry, joinery, plumbing, plastering, brick and block work, external works and associated finishing trades including tiling, painting, and decorating. Operatives use a wide variety of hand and power tools, materials, components, fixtures and fittings, ensuring work that is carried out is compliant with health and safety requirements, and meets building safety regulations and legislation.

This occupation is found in the construction and built environment sector, where properties across the housing, healthcare, social care, hospitality, education, commercial, leisure, retail, and private and public sectors, require maintenance to keep them in a safe working condition, and to optimise their quality or performance.

Progression opportunities
After completing this Apprenticeship, learners can progress onto the Level 3 Building Services Engineering Maintenance or Team Leader/Supervisor Apprenticeship.
With experience, roles may include Facilities Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, or Estates Technician, supporting larger property portfolios or specialist areas such as compliance, energy management, or refurbishment.
