Jessica Brooks-Atherton | A-Levels - Biology, Chemistry and Maths

I knew I wanted to go to university after college and that lectures are held in a very different way to how school lessons take place. I felt Loughborough College would help bridge the gap between a rigid school structure and independent university learning.

I really enjoy my courses! All my A-Levels (Biology, Chemistry and Maths) link together which is useful because I will learn something in one subject that will come up in another and it is great being able to apply that knowledge in different situations. There is also lots of wider research I can do which is really interesting as well.

I have been given lots of support whilst at college. From extra help within my lessons or attending 1-1’s with my teachers, to support with my personal statement and UCAS application, I have been given no end of support.

My subject tutors are great and I get on well with all of them, and my PAPD tutor is great as well and I know I could go to her if anything was wrong. Last year I was in a tutorial where we focused on applying to medicine and that was so useful to have a tutor who knew my ambitions and could help me with that process.

All the classrooms are really well equipped, especially the labs in which I have participated in both required and extra practical lessons. The library is also great and there are ample resources to use as well as plenty of study spaces.

The main opportunities made available to me have been through enrichment. I am currently lead-student ambassador and a peer mentor. Without college enrichment programmes I wouldn’t be able to do either. I have also been able to attend many trips surrounding my subjects that have helped me develop my subject knowledge too.

I would recommend Loughborough College for A-Levels as I think it offers a great balance of support and independence for my learning. The teachers are also all really knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects which is amazing as you can tell they really like what they do. The tutorial and enrichment programmes are also excellent at college and I don’t think I’d have had so many opportunities elsewhere.

I have just applied to medical school and in the future, I would love to be a hospital doctor, more specifically a surgeon, but that is subject to change.
