Oliver J Smyth | Electrical Installation Diploma, Level 2

I chose to study at Loughborough College because lots of my family and friends recommended the college to me, as well as the fact that Loughborough College has good reviews and a high pass rate.

My course is split into three different types of learning. I spend Mondays in the workshop doing practical assessments, this entails following diagrams, accurately fixing components to the workshop walls, selecting the correct equipment and tooling. I spend Tuesday’s in a classroom study electrical theory. This includes learning electrical calculations and the general principles around electrical systems. Finally, on Wednesday's we have online lessons. The online lessons are usually used to ‘recap’ areas where students may have struggled or to introduce new units within the course.

I feel as though the lecturers genuinely care and want all students to succeed. When students are struggling with the work, a lecturer is always quick to help out.

Our progress tutor is incredible positive and motivating, always looking out for student’s well-being and keeping them informed with how they are progressing through the course. Personally, I have required very little support in college. The only support I have requested was an initial assessment regarding ADHD.

College facilities are usually kept very clean and are well respected. The library is perfect for revising and has a good internet connection. The View and Box Office serve good food at a fair price. The main reception is very proactive and have always been quick to help when I have forgotten my college ID or have any questions.

I have been given the opportunity to join lots of college clubs as well as access to the campus gym. The job shop helped me to find a work placement which has been extremely useful in supporting my college learning.

I would recommend this course to anyone who is a hands-on learner and has an interest in electrical principles. I find the course really interesting and it has a relaxed and varied style of learning.

My future plans are to qualify as an electrician and start my own electrical firm.
