Armed Forces Inspire Public Services Learners with Campus Visits

Public Services learners started the new academic term with visits from members of both the Royal Air Force and the British Army last week for a series of engaging sessions around employment opportunities, STEM skills, and coding.

Last Monday, Level 3 Public Services students met with Corporal Johnny Miller and Sergeant Craig James, members of the RAF Engagement Team for an interactive discussion around careers and opportunities in the Royal Air Force. Learners had the chance to learn more about a future career in the Armed Forces, and took part in team building and leadership tasks, designed to build confidence and communication skills.

Second year learner Taryn was enthused by the session and shared, “It was a really engaging and informative session. It’s given us all lots to think about for our future careers. We had the opportunity to ask questions and gained lots of insights about life in the RAF.”

Later on in the week, Public Services students were visited by members of the Royal Corps of Signals, the British Army’s communications experts, who taught learners about cyber security and coding. The interactive session allowed learners to get involved with STEM-based tasks, expanding on their problem-solving skills, and discovering more about encryption and code breaking. Level 3 National Diploma learner Chenae said, “It’s been brilliant learning how to use the technology the Royal Corps of Signals employ on a daily basis, and working together to break the codes was an exciting way to develop our communication skills.”

Lecturer Stuart Taylor added, “It is always a pleasure to host the Armed Forces here on campus and give learners a hands-on opportunity to see the wide variety of roles each service employs. Learners found both sessions interesting and informative, and we hope to have similar visits throughout the year to inspire our students’ future career paths.”
