Brooksby College is celebrating another highly successful lambing season, achieving an impressive 204% lambing percentage while providing students with invaluable practical experience and welcoming hundreds of visitors to the campus farm.

During the season, Agriculture students had the opportunity to experience every aspect of the lambing process, from preparing ewes and monitoring animal welfare to assisting with births and caring for newborn lambs. The hands-on experience forms a vital part of students’ practical agricultural education, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed for careers in the farming industry.

Alongside supporting student learning, Brooksby College hosted 14 community and school visits throughout the lambing season, giving local children and families the opportunity to learn more about farming, animal care and food production.

As part of the visitor programme, LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) delivered a series of educational sessions focused on sustainable sheep farming and environmental responsibility.

LEAF’s Education Specialist, Anna Fryer shared: “Alongside the lambing experience, LEAF has been delivering sessions focused on sustainable sheep farming, helping visitors explore how modern farmers balance productivity with environmental responsibility.

“A key aspect of these sessions is to help visitors understand the journey from grass to food product, showing how sheep convert grass grown on farms into nutritious food. To bring this learning to life, children also took part in planting grass seeds, providing a simple but memorable way to reinforce the importance of grass-based farming systems and the connection between farming, food, and the environment.”

The College – which is part of the wider Loughborough College Group alongside Loughborough College, Stephenson College, and IGNITE Performing Arts – also welcomed staff from across the organisation for two Staff Lambing sessions, which raised £150 for The Farming Community Network, a charity that supports farmers and rural communities across the UK.

The lambing season is a key part of the curriculum at Brooksby College, combining practical learning with industry-standard husbandry practices and community engagement opportunities.

The College continues to invest in the future of Land-based education with major developments across the campus, including a new state-of-the art Agri-Tech Centre due to open later this year, which will further enhance opportunities for students to develop industry-ready skills using modern farming technologies and sustainable agricultural practices, helping prepare the next generation of professionals for careers across the evolving agricultural sector.
