Loughborough College have played their part in tackling digital poverty and supporting employability with their donation of 30 refurbished laptops to Leicestershire-based addiction recovery charity The Carpenter’s Arms.

This donation now means that the 29 residents at the charity’s Six Hills property in Loughborough can access IT equipment in order to support their progress towards living independently, and acquiring new employment-related skills. It represents a huge improvement in resources available to the residents, who previously had access to just one laptop donated several years ago.

Loughborough College’s Director of IT and Digital Chris Manton said: “All the laptops have got Windows installed and have wireless cards which means residents at The Carpenter’s Arms’s can access important web-based platforms.

“I’m delighted that our donation will allow so many men to undertake online learning, including working towards their CSCS card – an important qualification for working in the Construction industry – as well as building confidence in using software such as Word and Excel, working on their CVs, searching for jobs, attending online interviews and, when the time comes, finding their next home.”

The Carpenter's Arms is a Leicestershire-based charity that supports men who are challenged by issues with drugs, alcohol, or other forms of addiction. Established in 2008, its residential programme includes support sessions, group work, employability support and leisure activities.

CEO of The Carpenter’s Arms Richard Spence said: “Many of our residents have experienced chaotic lives from an early age which naturally impacts their opportunity and ability to learn.

“Loughborough College’s very generous donation of 30 laptops means we have a reliable bank of IT equipment which the men can book out in the same way as a library book, and can use to build up their online qualifications, in subjects of their choosing.”
