Electrical Installation Students Discover Opportunities in Power

Full-time Electrical Installation students participated in an award-winning partnership, led by National Grid, aimed at supporting young people with apprenticeship opportunities in the energy industry.
The Grid for Good programme, which won last year’s Personnel Today Early Careers award offers young people the chance to connect to various types of apprenticeships, upskilling opportunities, and support on their journey into the energy sector.
Students from across the Electrical Installation department participated in a National Grid Industry workshops, giving them the opportunity to take part in interactive session of gaming-based assessments, team building, and problem-solving exercises aimed at helping students secure work experience and job opportunities.
Led by Young Enterprise Area Manager, Robin Neighbour and National Grid volunteers Francisca, Deborah, and Paul, students were also given a masterclass in the Situation, Task, Action, Results (STAR) STAR method used at interviews.
Electrical Installation student Reily Nash enjoyed the problem-solving and teambuilding exercise, and shared: “We worked together in small groups to prioritise available items a survival kit for survivors of a plane crash. It was a really interesting way of highlighting the importance of teambuilding and challenged us to think in new ways.”
Students were also given invaluable career advice, and learnt top tips on each stage of the Apprenticeship application process. They were offered key insights into how Apprenticeships can support career development, and how to develop their confidence in the world of work.
Level 2 student Charley Ward shared: “It has opened my eyes to the fantastic opportunities available to us all. It’s motivational to see the ways we could progress onto career development whilst supporting the going journey to net zero.”
