Thursday 22nd May 2025

Two members of the College’s Elite Sports department, Head of Elite Sport Matt O’Dowd and Deputy Head Nick Probett were invited to attend the prestigious Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace last week.
The invitation was extended by SportsAid, in recognition of Nick and Matt’s outstanding contributions to education and skills within the field of sport, and their dedication to student-athletes at the College. SportsAid is a national charity that offers financial support and personal development opportunities to the next generation of British sports stars.
Held in the magnificent gardens of Buckingham Palace, the Royal Garden Party is a longstanding tradition that celebrates individuals from across the UK who have made a positive impact in their communities and professions. This year’s event, hosted King Charles III, brought together thousands of guests for a unique opportunity to explore the royal grounds, enjoy afternoon tea, and listen to live music performed by military bands.
Nick and Matt joined a select group of invitees from across the country who have supported SportsAid’s mission to nurture young talent through mentoring, coaching, and education. Their work in the Elite Sport department has been instrumental in shaping programmes that allow student-athletes to thrive both academically and athletically.
Through their continued partnership with SportsAid, Nick and Matt have helped to create environments where aspiring athletes can build essential life skills alongside their training. Their dedication has contributed significantly to the personal and professional development of countless students.
Reflecting on the opportunity to attend the Garden Party, Nick shared: "Not only was the event a fantastic experience, it was humbling for the Elite Sport department to be given this recognition for our work in Education and Skills.
"Over the last 10 years in particular, the industry has seen huge growth and development between education providers and sports partners, and the positive impact this has on student-athletes performance, dual career options, and wider skill development as they progress. I'm proud to say that Loughborough College has been a key player in this and at the forefront of its continued development."
