Festival launched to provide mental health support for Loughborough students during lockdown

Posted: 26th February 2021 - 3:40pm

Students at Loughborough College are staging a week-long series of online events focussed on mental health and wellbeing in support of the charity Student Minds.

The Be Well Festival will take place over 5 days from 1st – 5th March 2021 and will offer students and young people the opportunity to take part in a programme of events aimed at supporting their mental wellbeing.

The online events will include a meditation workshop, talks on wellbeing, exercise classes, a cookery demonstration by award winning chef Jean Christophe Novelli, and will conclude with a cocktail making masterclass and quiz.

A team of second year degree students has formed Rise Events and isstaging the festival in response to mental health concerns raised by the current Covid 19 pandemic. According to the UK government, one in three students have experienced mental health issues for which they felt they needed help.

Annika Jones, of Rise Events, said: “We want to provide students and young people with a useable set of mental health tools, and it is important to us that the events programme is enjoyable as well as enlightening and informative. I think a lot of students are suffering due to the lockdown and we wanted to make each event meaningful but also fun to engage with.”

With support from Loughborough College the organisers of the Be Well Festival hope to raise funds for the charity Student Minds.

Jo Maher, Principal & CEO of Loughborough College, said: “I’m so proud that our students are focusing on this vital subject in such a creative way as part of their course. The week of activity, including securing a celebrity chef, expert speakers and interactive events is a fantastic way of getting the message out to our students and anyone facing mental health challenges.

“Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our students is Loughborough College’s top priority and their work really complements the range of support we offer.”

The Be Well Festival starts with Mindful Monday, an introduction to meditation by Ben Smith of www.alignmindbody.co.uk.

Talk Tuesday comprises of two 20-minute talks on wellbeing by life coach CJ Louise and Jo Maher, Principal & CEO at Loughborough College.

On Workout Wednesday there is a HIIT exercise class followed by 20 minutes of mindful stretching hosted by fitness coach Mike Bines.

Takeaway Thursday sees award-winning chef Jean Christophe Novelli guide students through the preparation of a delicious healthy meal.

And Fun Friday concludes the festivities with a cocktail masterclass followed by a fun general knowledge quiz complete with prizes.
