John Curtis and JTL Electrical apprentices

First year JTL Electrical apprentices based at Loughborough College were visited by John Curtis of JCC Lighting last week to speak about emergency lighting during power outages and the vital role it plays in guiding people safely along escape routes during fire evacuations.

John spoke in detail about the legal regulations around emergency lighting, covering the legal requirements and responsibilities needed to ensure this essential system is installed and maintained. During the important talk, John also talked about carrying out an emergency lighting risk assessment and how this will impact apprentices in their future careers.

During an interactive section of the event, John involved the apprentices in scenarios simulating real-life situations, identifying the correct number of lights, where they should be located and how signage should be positioned. John also showed the apprentices examples of incorrect installations and set them the task of identifying how to rectify the mistakes with the appropriate emergency lighting systems.

Reflecting on the experience, JTL Electrical first year apprentice Ben Birtwistle said: “John’s enthusiasm and passion came across very clearly. We learnt a lot about the importance of emergency lighting, and we all enjoyed the talk about such an important topic.”
