Lightning Strikes Twice as Loughborough Win Second Netball Title

Loughborough’s own Lightning netball squad have won a second Netball Super League title, triumphing with a 57-48 win over London Pulse at the sold-out final at Copper Box Arena.

The Loughborough Lightning team compromises over ten College alumni, alongside current student Mary Cholhok.

BSc Hons. Sports Coaching learner Mary, who led the Offensive charge has been an impressive addition to the team, being named the season’s top goal scorer. Tallying an extraordinary 908 goals over 19 appearances, Mary scored a staggering 41 goals in the nail-biting grand final match this past weekend.

Held at the iconic Olympic Park in West London with a sold-out audience of passionate supporters, the squad took the title for a second time in three years this past weekend, on Sunday June 11. The team brought home an incredible victory in an electric game, making a remarkable comeback from an early quarter loss.

Speaking about Mary’s phenomenal season and continued success, Course Leader Laura Steele said, “Mary’s work ethic and talent have been clear this season and she has continued to show her outstanding abilities in Loughborough, on a national stage, and globally.

“She is a fantastic student with a tremendous career ahead. Players like her are the reason we are known as the Talent Factory.”

Since moving to the UK in 2019, Mary has been a crucial part of the Loughborough Lightning squad, excelling in her sport, and being supported by the staff and facilities at the College and University.

Rounding off a storming season, Mary was named as one of the leagues’ All Star seven taking the title of top Goal Scorer, alongside College DiSE alumna and Lightning teammate Fran Williams who claimed the Goal Defense All Star award.
