More than £1,000 raised for charity after best friend’s death

Three Loughborough College colleagues have raised more than £1,000 after completing a gruelling challenge for brain charities after a deadly aneurysm claimed the lives of one of their best friends.

Tracy Harmer, Kay Herbert and Corrine Gardner completed the equivalent distance of a marathon by climbing, walking and running in memory of Tracy’s best friend, Sharron Cliffe, who died suddenly at the age of 49 at Christmas, leaving behind her 10-year-old son.

Tracy wanted to do something to support other victims of brain injuries and, with colleagues Kay and Corrine, they signed up for the Brainathlon – a national event designed to raise cash for Brain Research UK, Brain Tumour Research and Epilepsy Research UK.

Tracy said: “I was so glad that we entered as a team because we were there to support each other every (literal) step of the way. We really encouraged each other throughout the challenges and after crossing the finish lines.

“For me, the challenge was very emotional and I am so grateful that Corinne and Kay gave up their time to do a challenge in memory of someone they’d never even met.

“Our initial target was £300 so when the total passed £1,000 we were absolutely delighted and so proud of what we had achieved for the three fantastic charities. It was exciting to see the total rising and we have been amazed by the kindness and generosity of everyone who has donated. Thank you all so much.

“I know Sharron would have been proud of us as well – as I’m sure she would have been laughing at me trying to march up some of those hills.”

Corinne ran 15 miles, Tracy walked 10 miles and Kay climbed the equivalent of 1.2 miles (19 times to the top of the College’s S Block).
