Paralympic sprint champion, Thomas Young MBE, has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award following his medal-winning exploits in Tokyo.

The 21-year-old, who is currently studying a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching degree at the College, is on the final shortlist in the Achievement in Disability Sport category of the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Awards.

He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in January for services to sport after winning gold in the T38 100m event at the Tokyo Paralympics, adding to his European title. He was also crowned the British Male Para Athlete of the Year by Athletics Weekly 2021.

Danny Lee, Curriculum Manager for Sport FE at Loughborough College, nominated Thomas for the award. He said: “We’re thrilled to bits that Thomas has been shortlisted. His achievements over the last two years, in the face of so much adversity, are truly inspiring.

“He has been a Loughborough College student for several years and, in that time, we’ve seen him grow and develop into the world class athlete he is today through hard work, determination and passion.

“As a UK Sports Inclusion Hub, it’s even more pleasing to see Thomas shortlisted because he has been a great supporter and ambassador for disabled sport at College.”

The AoC Sport Awards recognise the achievements and inspirational work of staff and students at colleges throughout the UK.

The annual awards represent the very best approaches that colleges are adopting to ensure that every student is regularly participating in sport or physical activity.

The winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony on 29th April 2022.
