Public Services Students Get a Chance to Try Wheelchair Basketball

Posted: 24th April 2023 - 11:04am

Learners on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services course recently had the chance to engage in a match of Wheelchair Basketball during a unique Physical Training session, part of a Public Services course module.

Lecturer Stuart Taylor led the sessions for first and second year students, aiming to build upper body strength, cardio endurance, and physical coordination. The sessions also gave learners the chance to establish skills and knowledge in critical thinking, teamwork, decision making, and resilience, all whilst developing a sense of empathy, key skills for learners on the Public Services programme.

Stuart said “The main reason for the sessions was to give variety within my sessions whilst developing not only physically but also emotionally.

Every group I teach had the opportunity to access the wheelchair-based sports session and they all thoroughly enjoyed it”.

Second year student Sebastian Yorkstone added, “It was the most fun Physical Training session I’ve ever had”.

Physical Training is one of the 18 modules covered on the Uniformed Protective Services course, and serves as a key skill in learning, with previous students going on to careers in criminology, teaching, emergency services, the Ministry of Defence, and more.
