Public Services lecturer, Sheree Wheatley along with a dedicated group of friends, family, and colleagues, laced up their running shoes to successfully complete the Leicester Half Marathon on behalf of LOROS Hospice and smashing their original target.
The team raised an impressive £4,443, surpassing their original target of £3,500, but for Sheree and her club, Run Leicester, the event held special significance.
“Running for LOROS was especially important,” said Sheree. “They supported a friend of ours who sadly died of pancreatic cancer just a few months ago. Training was tough, but it was worth it for this incredible cause.”
LOROS Hospice, a Leicester-based charity provide care and support for terminally ill patients and their families. Motivated by the desire to give back to the organisation that provides crucial end-of-life care, the group trained rigorously in the lead-up to the race.
"The experience was tough but rewarding," Sheree shared after crossing the finish line. "We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who supported us and helped us beat our target."
The Run Leicester team included a diverse group of participants, from seasoned runners to first timers, all united by their shared goal. Among those running were friends, family, and colleagues from across Loughborough College.
As donations continue to add up, Sheree has been touched by the words of encouragement from donors. “We’ve heard from so many people whose lives have been touched by LOROS, it’s been so moving to read people’s messages. It was another reason to stay focused and motivated, and I’m so proud of the difference we’ll be able to make with this donation.”
Sheree’s run is part of the College’s wider Team 1909 fundraising initiative.
Team 1909 is the Loughborough College branch of fundraising and community outreach, with all efforts making a vital contribution to the nationwide Good for Me, Good for FE campaign, which encourages charitable and voluntary opportunities in further education institutions.
