Stephenson College Alumnus Launches Thriving Carpentry & Joinery Business Across the East Midlands

Former Stephenson College student Freddie Harriman, founder of FH Carpentry and Joinery, is making a name for himself across Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire after turning his passion for carpentry into a fast-growing business. 

Freddie completed his Level 1 and Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery qualifications at Stephenson College, Coalville, graduating in Summer 2025.  

During his time at college, Freddie quickly progressed through increasingly advanced projects, supported by lecturers who recognised his talent and drive. He was even given the opportunity to try elements of T Level work as his skills and confidence grew.  

When reflecting on his time at Stephenson, Freddie said: “My lecturers saw that my skills were growing rapidly and gave me lots of opportunities to take on larger and more advanced projects. I had a great experience with my lecturer, Dave, who encouraged us to work on projects independently but was always there to offer advice and support when needed.” 

Shortly after leaving college, Freddie launched FH Carpentry and Joinery. The early days were challenging but with strong marketing, determination, and a growing reputation for quality workmanship, Freddie is now in high demand. 

His current projects include a major commission on a six-bedroom property, where he is responsible for everything from floor joists and roofing to doors, kitchens, architraves, skirting and flooring. 

 Freddie credits his college experience for giving him the confidence and practical ability to take on such largescale work, adding: “The skills I learnt at Stephenson College enabled me to do what I’m doing now. The practical experience in the college workshops and the work experience element of courses were both so important for me in building real-world skills. 

“I would definitely recommend studying a trade at college and encourage anyone who’s considering studying at Stephenson to give it a go – you never know where it might take you.”
