Students start the walk from Loughborough College's Main Reception

Earlier this month, 36 members of staff and students from across our Sixth Form department laced up their walking shoes to take part in the Walk for Gilly, a fundraising event to raise a staggering £3,248 towards the cost of academic coach Gilly Entwistle’s brain cancer treatment.

Leaving from the Main Reception, walkers were cheered on friends, family, and residents along the 10km route. Joining them on the walk was Gilly herself, who spoke to the walkers, thanking them for all their help and support.

Accounting Lecturer, James Shields who arranged the walk shared: “Gilly was very touched by the kindness from the students and colleagues who took part in the walk. As we undertook the route, she spoke to several of the learners she has supported at College.

“It was very moving, and we are so proud of all our students who dedicated their time to fundraise for Gilly. The fundraiser is still open, and donations are still coming in. It goes to show even the smallest contribution can make a huge difference.”

In addition to the 10km walk, six brave students climbed Mount Snowdon in Wales last month, adding to the outstanding total of nearly £3,500. All donations raised by the Walk for Gilly will go directly to the Gilly Kicks Cancer campaign, set up by Gilly’s family to raise awareness and funds for treatment.

Gilly was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in January of this year. Having undergone surgery to remove 97% of the tumour, Gilly is in need of urgent treated therapies and immunotherapy to improve her quality of life and survival rate. More information about the Gilly Kicks Cancer campaign can be found on GoFundMe.
