This is a two-year, full-time course aimed at people who are interested in pursuing a career in the creative industries. You'll learn both the practical, artistic skills and the theory that informs them. There will also be help to develop your professional practice.

Emphasis is placed on practical responses to set tasks, through a mixture of art disciplines such as photography, mixed media, graphics, digital art, 2D and 3D, printmaking, and fine art. As part of the programme of study you will have opportunities to go on trips, visit exhibitions and also hear from guest speakers.

Course Content

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on practical responses to set tasks, through a range of units. These include elements of:

  • Visual Recording in Art and Design
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
  • Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design
  • Visual Communication in Art and Design
  • Contextual Influences in Art and Design
You will complete a series of projects designed to enhance your skill set in range of art disciplines such as photography, mixed media, graphics, digital art, 2D and 3D, printmaking, and fine art.

You will be given coursework based on tutor-led classes but you are also expected to produce your own briefs to work within specific units.

Entry Requirements

  • At least five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including English Language. You will also need a satisfactory Maths grade.
  • or
  • a BTEC Level 2 Diploma (at Merit level), with satisfactory English and Maths grades.

Progression

Successful completion of the course could lead to employment in the creative industries or a degree-level course. Former students have gone on to study subjects such as graphic design, photography, art history, illustration and animation, computer games modelling, Interior architecture and design and jewellery design.
