With the 2024 Olympic Games just around the corner, ten more Loughborough College stars have booked their plane tickets to Paris as part of Team GB’s athletics squad.
Nine former students, and one current learner from the College were announced as part of the team, taking the total number of Loughborough College and University representatives in the Great British team to over fifty athletes.
Amongst the competitors hoping to bring a medal back for Team GB are former College students Emile Cairess, Lewis Davey, Jacob Fincham-Dukes, Keely Hodgkinson, Matthew Hudson-Smith, Hannah Kelly, George Mills, and Jemma Reekie. Heading to Paris alongside these icons of sport is current Diploma of Sporting Excellence (DiSE) student Phoebe Gill.
Having stormed to victory in the 800m qualifying trials last week, Phoebe wowed her fellow athletes, with Keely Hodgkinson remarking in an article from The Telegraph, “She is definitely up there with making the final if it goes the right way…she is showing strength and speed, I feel like amazing things are going to happen.”
Head of Elite Sport and Development at Loughborough College, and former Olympic long-distance runner, Matt O’Dowd shared, “To see the College and our students represented on the world’s biggest sporting stage is fantastic.
“We are so proud of our learners past and present who have worked tirelessly to reach this achievement, and everyone at Loughborough College is excited to see how they perform against some of the world’s greatest athletes. We’ll all be cheering them on from here.”
Loughborough College has a proud reputation for supporting athletes through the Athletics Academy. Launched in 2021, the Academy has supported athletes with training and counts superstars Thomas Young, Libby Clegg, Sophie Hitchon, and now staff member Martyn Rooney amongst its alumni.
