Learners, staff, and alumni of Loughborough College were celebrated earlier this month at the annual Charnwood Sports Award, with an amazing six nominations and win for Paralympic champion and College alumni, Jonathan Broom-Edwards.
The ceremony, which recognises the work and dedication of individuals and workplaces across the borough making a difference to health and wellbeing, was held at Burleigh Court on Monday 4 December.
Among the winners was Paralympic gold medallist and College alumni, Jonathan Broom-Edwards, who took home the Senior Sports Person of the Year Award.
Crediting his “determination and resilience in the face of adversity”, Jonathan won the prize after he was crowned World Champion at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris earlier this year in a highly competitive T64 high jump final.
Speaking to Charnwood Borough Council after the awards, Jonathan reflected, “Sport has done so much for me, so to have an event like this where we celebrate what sport is doing for the community, I think it’s so powerful.”
College representation was also strong among the other categories as six current and former students and staff were nominated for titles. Among them were tennis ace Dahnon Ward, who took the New York US Open with a double championship to his name, and Mary Cholhok, who was named top goal scorer in the Netball Super League, triumphing with Loughborough Lightning earlier this year.
