From exciting hairdressing competitions to community outreach projects, it’s been a busy six months for learners on our Hairdressing, Barbering, and Beauty courses. We spoke to Curriculum Manager Claire Springthorpe about her recent highlights, and what students are most proud of.

Platinum College of Excellence Award
In November, the Beauty Therapy team were honoured with the prestigious Platinum College of Excellence Award from the world-renowned Ragdale Hall. As one of just six colleges across the country to receive the title, Loughborough College is now one of an elite group of FE institutions able to meet the high standards of the luxury spa and hotel.

Celebrating the award, Claire shared, “It’s a massive honour to have received this award from such a prestigious spa in our area. Our team and students really deserve the recognition.”

Following the award, the team were invited to an exclusive celebration evening at Ragdale Hall where they reunited with former students who have since gone on to work as therapists at Ragdale.

Facial Massage Master Class
More career development came for Level 3 Beauty learners who had the opportunity to get hands-on experience of facial massage with Ragdale Hall. Therapists visited students at our on-site Radmoor Centre salon to offer industry-level insight on popular beauty treatments and share sought-after skills and advice for students going on to careers in the sector.

Visit from ASP Haircare Educator
Hairdressing learners were offered a unique chance to get insight from a global haircare brand when Matt Brooks, Technical Educator for ASP visited Radmoor Centre. In this fascinating workshop, students gained invaluable information about utilising the colour wheel when working with clients, and how ASP Expert Haircare products can be used.

“Matt Brooks is a fantastic educator and students always enjoy his insights and support. Our learners loved learning the theory behind the ASP brand with the prospect of trying their newly developed skills on their own clients for future assessments.” Claire said.

UV Nail Polish Training
“Learning sought-after skills from industry professionals, and building relationships with reputable employers is a key part of our ethos.” Claire shared following an exciting course with renowned hair and beauty trainers, Beauty Training Rooms UK.

Level 2 Beauty Therapy learners attended the interactive workshop on UV gel nail polish skills in December, taking part in assessed training, which all students passed. Learners enjoyed the day, demonstrating the latest and most in-demand industry skills.

The workshop fit seamlessly into the qualification’s manicure unit, preparing students for formative assessments and industry requirements. Beauty Training Rooms representative Nikoletta shared, “We had great fun all day, achieving some great results.”

VR Experience
Level 3 Beauty Therapy students embraced the world of technology by diving into the exciting world of virtual reality. Assisted by the College’s E-Learning team, students donned state-of-the-art VR headset units to explore the human skeletal system up close.

Sessions proved extremely popular with all students, who enjoyed the opportunity to enhance their learning in a fun and interactive way.

Reflecting back on the exciting experience of the last few months, Claire said “There’s never been a more exciting time to be a part of the Hair and Beauty department at Loughborough College! Our learners are passionate about their skills and development, and we are proud to offer them interactive and unique learning opportunities.”
