Loughborough College students turn music promoter for live gigs

Loughborough College students have been learning valuable lessons about live music – by turning promoter and creating their own events from scratch.

Months of hard work by the music students involved everything from coming up with a concept, signing artists and promoting the gigs to working on sound and lighting culminated in two performances. A host of College talent was highlighted with Doggy Rock, named with visually impaired music student Sven Cassidy’s guide dog Kieran in mind, and Campfire Showcase both proving a hit with audiences.

“Our students have been learning about ensemble performance and were tasked with putting together a live music event, as they would in a professional environment,” said Matthew Toole, Loughborough College music lecturer.

“They worked in teams, organized meetings, created mood boards, researched the best promotion methods, liaised with designers, booked the bands and dealt with contracts and staged the gigs on the night, taking care of sound and lighting.

“It boosts their skills in so many areas and is fantastic experience for them to take into the workplace.”
