Jessica Wood started her Loughborough College course when she was 36 weeks pregnant with her son – and less than a year later has achieved GCSE results to turn her career dreams into reality.

Jess, 27, was awarded 7 for maths GCSE– equivalent to A – and distinctions in her Health Access to Higher Education course, ensuring she is now heading to university in Leicester to study midwifery.

“I have dreamed about becoming a midwife for years so I am thrilled. A month after I began my course at Loughborough College I gave birth to Nate and I also have a two year old daughter, Callie but I was determined to give it my best shot – and there is no doubt that the brilliant teaching, support and guidance I received at the College played a major part in getting me to where I wanted to be.

“I took on the higher tier for GCSE maths and the teachers were absolutely committed to getting me through. It was never a case of ‘if’, always ‘when’ and they were constantly there for me. Even if I wasn’t in college and was emailing I’d get a quick reply, whether that was at midnight or 6.00am.

“I used to be a home carer in the community and I have been wanting to re-train as a midwife for a long time. My husband Geoff has been amazing, driving me in to college and having the kids while he works full time. When I picked up the results I was so shocked. The exams had been challenging and there had been a lot of hard work and chaos but to achieve this makes it all worth it.. I am so happy.”
