Hands on airline safety insight at Heathrow for Loughborough College students

Loughborough College students have been given a hands-on insight into airline safety by experts at British Airways.

British Airways’ Global Learning Academy, near Heathrow, provides real life cabin crew training and hosted the College travel and tourism students for a Safety Equipment and Procedures Awareness Day.

“The group was taken through a range of emergency simulations from wearing a smoke hood and dealing with fire in the cabin to survival if an aircraft goes into the water, including use of the evacuation slide and life raft,” said Donna Rowley, lecturer in travel and tourism at Loughborough College.

“The students were also given relevant medical training and even had the chance to practice aircraft passenger announcements and to deliver safety demonstrations.

“Being given the chance to be hands with real life equipment under the guidance of the experts who train cabin crew in real life was a fantastic opportunity for our students.

“It has undoubtedly boosted their skills and knowledge for their NCFE cabin crew qualification at Loughborough College and everyone had a great day. An added bonus is that our students have been offered apprenticeships with a major airline – they are thrilled.”
