BBC TV arrived at Loughborough College today to join its 24 hour Sportathon for Comic Relief.

Geeta Pendse heard how more than 300 students and staff are set to take part in 21 different sports during the course of the day-long fundraiser – some remaining for the entire day and night.

As a clock counted down the minutes, Loughborough College Sport FE lead Danny Lee offered a tour of activities : “The idea for the event came from Sam Waldron, one of our sport students and we plan to smash our target of raising £2,000 for Comic Relief.

“We’ve got Leicestershire County Cricket Club taking part here today, as well as the Tennis Foundation, RFL Midlands and GB weightlifting . For a bit of fun we’ve even got Sumo suits, provided by g force events, and Sainsbury’s in Loughborough and Bianca’s pizzas in Quorn - as well as our very own catering staff at the College - have kindly offered to provide some fuel for us.

‘Every student will be doing at least an hour of sport and there are eight students, including Sam, who got here at 9.00 this morning and will be here throughout, until 9.00 tomorrow morning – alongside several staff, including me, who are also doing the full 24 hours.

“Sam and I are then on a bus to Italy for 17 hours for a College ski trip. We can sleep then – but for now we’re all having a great time boosting funds for a fantastic cause.”
