Loughborough College student marks 100 volunteer hours in community

A Loughborough College student has marked 100 hours of volunteering – after only four months of working in the community.

Soraia Mocas has been helping young people visiting Warning Zone to understand risks and consequences around issues including cyber bullying, grooming, anti social behaviour and peer pressure.

The 16 year old, who studies Public Services at Loughborough College, joined the Leicestershire life skills centre in autumn last year. ”It was frightening at first, to be faced with groups of ten and 11 year olds and have to keep their attention through all the activities while teaching them.

“But all the children are so nice I have steadily gained confidence. I always look forward to my volunteering. It is really rewarding to know you are helping them understand such valuable information.”

“Soraia asked if she could volunteer at Warning Zone and since then I have had nothing but excellent feedback from the centre regarding her attitude and performance.

“This is an outstanding achievement in a student new to Loughborough College and this, coupled with her outstanding work in tutorials, leaves me in no doubt Soraia can look forward to a great future at the College and beyond,” said Stephen Bowen, Senior Employment Broker at Loughborough College.

Louise Lemmon, Volunteer Coordinator at Warning Zone, added: “Soraia trained to be a volunteer children’s educator with us and quickly became a confident teacher.

“It was obvious that Soraia had worked hard learning the lesson plans and she grabbed the childrens’ attention throughout, delivering the key messages to them in an interesting and fun way, which they loved – and the children knew their stuff when they were quizzed on what they had learnt.

“Soraia has been nothing but pleasant, approachable and professional and it has been an absolute pleasure to have her with us.”
