Rio 2016: Second Paralympic medal for Loughborough College cyclist Sophie Thornhill on day four

It was two from two as Loughborough College cyclist Sophie Thornhill scooped her second Paralympic medal while elsewhere on day four in Rio fellow student Olivia Breen competed in the long jump final and alumnus David Phillipson was on court for second round singles and doubles matches in the wheelchair tennis.

Sophie and pilot Helen Scott won bronze in the B 3000 km individual pursuit on Sunday to add to their time trial golden triumph only two days earlier when they smashed the Paralympic record.

After catching their New Zealand opponents in only four laps, the 20 year old Loughborough College Sport student said:
“That really hurt. We just went for the catch and played to our strengths.

"It’s massive, we never even entertained the idea of a medal in this event.

“To come away with a medal is unbelievable.”

Later Loughboorugh College athlete Olivia Breen came 12th in the women’s long jump T38 final with a best leap of 3.99m.

In the wheelchair tennis it was a second round exit for former College student David Phillipson in the singles and doubles.

Phillipson lost to number one seed Stephane Houdet 6-1 6-2 and later joined forces with partner Marc McCarroll for their men’s doubles - but the pair were beaten by Houdet and Piefer 6-0 6-2.

Day five will see former Loughborough College student Ellie Simmonds looking to take gold in the 200m medley SM6 in the pool.
