Rio 2016: Loughborough College student joins rugby sevens squad for sport’s Olympic debut

Megan Jones is the latest Loughborough College name joining Team GB in Brazil this year as rugby sevens makes its Olympic debut.

Twelve women’s team players have been selected to represent their country with the 19 year old College degree student named as a travelling reserve.

Megan, who is studying Sports Science with Sports Development and Management with Loughborough College, joins the women’s side in a year which sees Team GB rugby represented at Olympic level for the first time in 108 years.

Team GB Women Rugby Head Coach Simon Middleton named his 12-strong squad for the Rio games in Trafalgar Square and the team, who have been training full time as a wider GB group since October last year, have enjoyed success in a series of warm-up tournaments in Vancouver, Kazan and Las Vegas.

The women compete first from August 6-8 at the Deodoro Stadium in a pool which includes hosts Brazil, Japan and Canada. The men’s competition follows from August 9-11.

Emily Scarratt will captain the women’s squad, which features a number of experienced names from England’s 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup winning side and the squad who have competed in the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series last season as professional athletes.

Team GB Head Coach (Women) Simon Middleton said: “This is a hugely exciting moment for women’s rugby with sevens making its debut at the Olympic Games and we believe we have selected the best possible group of players to achieve success in Rio.

“The World Series this season proved how competitive the women’s rugby sevens circuit is and we’re very much looking forward to competing against the very best as a Team GB squad.

“The strength and depth of the wider training squad has not made the final selection easy. The players have been together since October and have trained so hard and really pushed the standards up of this group.

“I would like to thank the players who didn’t make the final squad for their fantastic contribution and putting us in the best possible place to play in Rio.”

The group were the final selected athletes for Team GB for the Rio Games, which open on August 5.

The Women’s Rugby Sevens squad for Rio 2016: Claire Allan; Abbie Brown; Heather Fisher; Natasha Hunt; Jasmine Joyce; Katy McLean; Alice Richardson; Emily Scarratt; Emily Scott; Danielle Waterman; Joanne Watmore; Amy Wilson-Hardy. Travelling reserves: Megan Jones; Kay Wilson.
