Rio 2016: Record breaking relay final for women’s medley team

It was a record breaking final for Team GB in the women’s 4 x 100m relay on the last day of racing at the Olympics Aquatic Stadium in Brazil.

Former Loughborough College student Siobhan-Marie O’Connor became the first British female to win an Olympic medal in the 200m individual medley after surging to silver on day four.

Earlier on day eight fellow former student Fran Halsall was only two hundredths of a second away from an Olympic medal in the women’s 50m freestyle final.

Both swimmers returned to the pool to join teammates Chloe Tutton and Georgia Davies for the relay final where they finished seventh in a new British record of 3:56.96 minutes.

Siobhan-Marie O’Connor said: “It’s such a great way to finish off with those girls and we got a British record as well which tops it off really.

“To then see the boys win a silver medal was great and I’m so proud to be part of this team. It’s been such a brilliant week and one of the most successful weeks Britain have ever had at the Olympics so it’s been a dream week really.

“Fran’s [Halsall] had a tough night but she’s a great freestyler and it’s great to have her on that last leg for us. We’re all just so proud of this team.

“We’ve had a couple of tough finishes with fourths but everyone has worked their absolute hardest to be here and everyone should hold their heads up high.

“This week hasn’t really sunk in just yet. I’m just going to try to enjoy the rest of the Olympics, we’re here in Rio and it’s an incredible once in a lifetime opportunity.”
