Loughborough College have been crowned national champions in the Association of Colleges Sport Lockdown Challenge.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 National Championships due to the Covid-19 crisis, AoC Sport were eager to give students an alternative opportunity to represent their college during these difficult times and launched virtual challenges in each of the 12 National Championship sports, with scores from competitors from across the country entered onto an online leader board.

Loughborough College was named AoC National Champion for engagement, taking the top spot for the largest number of participants attempting the challenges. Not only did more than 200 of its Sport students get involved but four learners also became national champions in their individual sport.

Team GB U18 hockey star Tom Moorhouse won the hockey challenge of how many times an athlete could stand up and sit down in a mini whilst balancing a hockey ball on a hockey stick, achieving a score of 21 to take the championship title for the College.

England Volleyball player Alice Brand was named Champion after performing the most lying down and standing up repetitions whilst keeping a volleyball in the air.

Millie Mae Matthews took the Tennis National Championships by performing 100 volleys against the wall in the shortest amount of time - 53 seconds and Loughborough College Sport cricketer Jonny Lawrence was joint winner in the Cricket challenge by managing to clap 23 times whilst he threw a ball in the air before catching it.

Loughborough College also took second place in the Netball (Tasha Barnes), Football (Tom Stockley) and Cross Country (Luke Abdey) and the College came third in Basketball (Ethan Damerum) and Badminton (Jess Allen).

James Maudsley, who heads up the Loughborough College Sport Academies, said: “We are very pleased to be crowned as national champions, but all the credit must go to the learners for their efforts during this difficult time. We had over 200 learners get involved and film themselves completing a range of challenges and to win four individual challenges also further proves that this really is the best sports FE college in the UK.”
