New police officer Leandra returns to Loughborough College to help offer training insight

Newly-qualified police officer Leandra McCurry has been helping to offer Loughborough College public services students an insight into training for the service.

Leandra talked about her journey from College public services student to police officer and was joined by Leicestershire Police colleague PC Thomas, who shared information with the 50-strong group on routes into the force.

“From 2020 police officers will be required to have a degree and there are now three training pathways to achieve this,” said Loughborough College public services lecturer Fiona Strang, herself a former police officer.

“You can follow the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route, you can study for a degree in professional policing alongside working as a police special and then apply and finally there is the option for degree holders to complete a post-graduate policing qualification.

“It was really useful for our students to hear from Leandra about the18-months it took her to qualify as well as about her current role and PC Thomas helped reinforce the information we have been sharing with our students in college.

“That first-hand insight really boosted our students’ interest and we had large numbers eager to sign up for the seminar which enables you to enter the application process.”
